The fastest way to transcribe a TikTok video is to copy its link and paste it into a free TikTok to Text tool, which gives you the full transcript in a few seconds. You can also read along with TikTok's own captions, or screen record the video and upload the file. Below is every method, step by step, for iPhone, Android and computer.

1Transcribe a TikTok video with TikTok to Text

TikTok to Text turns any public TikTok into a plain-text transcript. It's free, there's no app to install, and you don't need an account.

  1. Copy the TikTok's link (steps for the app and for a computer are below).
  2. Open urltotext.com/tiktok-to-text and paste the link into the box.
  3. Click Get transcript.
  4. When the text appears, click Copy, or click Download to save it as a .txt file. On a phone you can also tap the share icon to send it to Notes, Docs or an email.

How it works: many TikToks already carry TikTok's own auto-generated captions. When a video has them, the tool uses those (you'll see "from TikTok's auto-captions" above the text), so the transcript comes back almost instantly. When a video has no captions, it downloads the audio, transcribes it with Whisper speech recognition, and deletes the audio straight away. Either way, you get clean text without timestamps.

Which links work: full links (tiktok.com/@user/video/...), the short links the app copies (vm.tiktok.com/... and tiktok.com/t/...), and links pasted together with other text. If you paste a whole message like "Check this out https://vm.tiktok.com/...", the tool pulls out the link for you.

Limits: videos up to 15 minutes without an account, or up to 60 minutes when you sign in to a free account. You can run 5 transcriptions an hour without an account and 30 an hour signed in. Most languages are detected automatically, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Hindi, Arabic, Japanese and Chinese.

The same tool exists for other apps: Instagram Reels, Facebook videos and X (Twitter) videos.

  1. Open the video in the TikTok app.
  2. Tap the Share button (the arrow on the right side of the video).
  3. Tap Copy link in the row of options at the bottom.
  4. Paste it into TikTok to Text with a long press and Paste.

The app copies a short link such as https://vm.tiktok.com/ZM..., which works fine.

2Turn on TikTok's built-in captions

If you only need to read what someone says, TikTok's own captions may be enough. TikTok generates auto captions for many videos, and creators can add their own.

Show captions while you watch (iPhone and Android)

  1. Open the video.
  2. Tap the Share button on the right.
  3. Swipe the bottom row if needed and tap Captions.
  4. Switch Show captions on (or off).

If Captions isn't in the share panel, that video doesn't have any. That's common for videos that are mostly music, very old posts, or languages TikTok's auto captions don't cover.

Can you copy TikTok's captions?

Not inside the app. TikTok shows captions one line at a time and has no button to copy, download or view them as a full transcript. To get them as text you can copy, paste the link into TikTok to Text, which reads those same captions when the video has them.

Limitations: auto captions often miss names, slang and product terms, and they don't punctuate well. They're fine for following along, less so for quoting.

3Transcribe a TikTok on your computer

On a computer the steps are the same, and copying the link is even easier.

  1. Open the video on tiktok.com in Chrome, Safari, Edge or Firefox.
  2. Copy the link. Either click the browser's address bar and press Ctrl + C (Cmd + C on Mac), or click Copy link next to the video's link in the panel beside the video. The Share arrow also has a Copy link option.
  3. Open TikTok to Text in a new tab, press Ctrl + V (Cmd + V on Mac) and click Get transcript.

If you're scrolling the For You feed, the address bar may not show the video's own link. Click the video to open it on its own page first, or use Copy link.

To read captions on the desktop site, look for the CC button on the video player. No CC button means the video has no captions.

4Save or screen record the video, then upload it

Sometimes a link won't work: the video was taken down after you saved it, you're offline, or you have the clip as a file from someone else. Then transcribe the file itself.

Save the video (when the creator allows it)

  1. Tap Share.
  2. Tap Save video. It goes to your camera roll or gallery, with a TikTok watermark.

If there's no Save video option, the creator has turned off downloads for that video.

Screen record it instead

iPhone:

  1. Open Control Center (swipe down from the top-right corner).
  2. Tap the Screen Recording button. If it isn't there, add it: in Control Center, tap + at the top left, then Add a Control›Screen Recording.
  3. Play the TikTok with the sound on, then tap the red recording indicator at the top of the screen and Stop.

Android (names vary by phone):

  1. Swipe down twice to open Quick Settings and tap Screen record (Samsung: Screen recorder).
  2. Choose to record Device audio or Media sounds, not just the microphone, so the video's sound is captured cleanly.
  3. Play the video, then tap the stop button in the notification or on the floating toolbar.

Upload the file

  1. Open Audio & Video to Text and choose Upload a file.
  2. Tap Choose an audio or video file and pick the recording (or drag it onto the page on a computer).
  3. Copy or download the transcript.

Uploads can be up to 95 MB in MP4, MOV, M4A, MP3, WAV, WebM and most other audio and video formats. A one-minute screen recording is usually far below that. Files are deleted as soon as they're transcribed.

5Transcribe and caption your own TikToks

If you're the creator, you have better options than transcribing after the fact.

Add auto captions in TikTok's editor

  1. Tap + at the bottom of the app and record or upload your video.
  2. On the editing screen, tap Captions in the toolbar on the right (it may be under the More arrow). The first time, TikTok asks you to opt in.
  3. Wait for TikTok to transcribe your speech, then tap a line to fix any mistakes.
  4. Tap Save, then finish and post as usual.

To fix captions on a video that's already live, open it, tap the caption on the video, tap Edit captions, make your changes, and tap Save. You can also set the spoken language before posting, under More options›Select video language, which helps auto captions come out right.

Get the transcript before you post

Your original clip is still on your phone, so you can transcribe it before TikTok ever sees it:

  • Plain transcript for a description, a script, or a blog post: upload the clip to Audio & Video to Text.
  • Timed captions to burn in with CapCut or another editor: upload it to the Subtitle Generator and download an SRT or VTT file. It works with TikTok links too, and splits captions into short lines of up to 42 characters. See our guide to generating subtitles from a video for how to use the file.

TikTok doesn't let you upload a separate caption file, so if you want styled subtitles, burn them into the video in your editor before posting.

Tip: captions matter. Many people watch with the sound off, and captions also make your videos accessible to deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers.

6Translate a TikTok video

To read a TikTok in a language you don't speak:

  1. Copy the video's link.
  2. Open the Video Transcript Translator and paste it.
  3. Pick a language under Translate into (English is the default, and there are 33 to choose from).
  4. Click Translate. Switch between Translation and Original to compare.

The video's spoken language is detected automatically, so you don't need to know what it is. If you only want the key points, the Video Summarizer takes the same TikTok link and can write the summary in your language.

7Get text from TikTok photo posts and on-screen text

TikTok photo posts (slideshows) are images with music, so there's usually no speech to transcribe. The words you want are in the pictures. The same goes for the text creators type over a video, like recipe steps or "5 tips" lists, which speech transcription won't pick up.

To get that text, use OCR (optical character recognition):

  1. Swipe to the slide you want and take a screenshot (iPhone: press the side button and volume up together; most Android phones: power and volume down).
  2. Open Image to Text and upload the screenshot. On a computer, you can just press Ctrl + V to paste a copied screenshot.
  3. Copy the text. Repeat for each slide, or sign in to upload up to 10 images at once.

For lists and recipes, turn on Keep line breaks under Options so each item stays on its own line. Images can be up to 10 MB in JPG, PNG, WebP and other common formats.

On iPhone, Live Text works too: open the screenshot in Photos, press and hold on the words, and tap Copy.

8Turn a TikTok into a blog post, captions and hashtags

Once you have the transcript, an AI chatbot can turn it into almost anything. Copy the text from TikTok to Text, then paste it into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini with a prompt like one of these.

Blog post:

Turn this TikTok transcript into a 600-word blog post. Keep my voice and
my examples. Add a clear title, short intro, H2 subheadings and a short
conclusion. Don't add facts that aren't in the transcript.

[paste transcript]

Post caption and hashtags:

Write 3 TikTok captions for this video, each under 150 characters, with a
hook in the first line. Then suggest 5 relevant hashtags: 2 broad, 3 niche.

[paste transcript]

Other formats:

From this transcript, write: a LinkedIn post, a 5-tweet thread, and a
newsletter paragraph. Keep the main point and the most quotable line.

[paste transcript]

Tips:

  • Fix names and brand terms in the transcript first, or the AI will repeat the mistakes.
  • Repurpose your own videos freely. For someone else's, quote and credit them, and don't republish their words as your own.
  • Doing this often? The Video Summarizer skips a step and gives you the key points straight from the link.

9Transcribe TikToks in bulk for research

Our free tools take one video at a time. For a handful of videos, that's still the quickest route. For large studies, TikTok has an official option.

The TikTok Research API gives approved researchers access to public video data, including a voice_to_text field with TikTok's transcript when one exists. Key facts:

  • Who can apply: researchers at non-profit academic institutions in the US, EEA, UK, Switzerland and Canada, plus some not-for-profit research organizations. Researchers must be independent of commercial interests. Apply on TikTok for Developers; TikTok says to expect a reply within about four weeks.
  • Quotas: it's been limited to 1,000 requests a day, with up to 100 records per request.
  • Coverage: studies have found many videos come back without a transcript, so plan to transcribe the rest yourself.

Businesses and marketers aren't eligible. If you need transcripts of many videos without the API, transcribe them one by one, and keep within TikTok's terms of service.

Tips for accurate TikTok transcripts

TikToks are hard to transcribe: background music, fast talking, slang, and several people talking at once. To get the best result:

  • Prefer the link over a screen recording. The original audio is cleaner than a re-recorded copy.
  • Record device audio, not the microphone, if you do screen record. A mic picks up room noise and your own voice.
  • Expect gaps over loud music. When a song is louder than the speaker, speech recognition misses words. Nothing fixes that fully, so read through and correct the transcript.
  • Song lyrics come out patchy. Sung words are much harder to recognize than speech. Search for the song's lyrics instead.
  • Check names, numbers and brands. These are where every transcription tool slips, including TikTok's own captions.
  • Short videos with no speech (dance trends, music only) return little or no text. That's expected.

Can you transcribe a private TikTok?

No. Private videos, friends-only videos, and videos from private accounts can only be watched while logged in as someone allowed to see them, so no online tool can open them from a link. Deleted videos don't work either.

If it's your own private video, you already have the original clip, so upload that to Audio & Video to Text. If someone shared a private video with you, ask them for the file.

Frequently asked questions

Can I transcribe a TikTok video for free?

Yes. Paste the link into TikTok to Text and click Get transcript. It's free for videos up to 15 minutes without an account, or up to 60 minutes with a free account. No app or sign-up needed.

How do I get a transcript of a TikTok?

Tap Share›Copy link in the TikTok app, open urltotext.com/tiktok-to-text, paste the link and click Get transcript. Then copy the text or download it as a .txt file.

Does TikTok have a transcript feature?

Not one you can copy. TikTok shows auto captions on the video (tap Share›Captions to turn them on), but it doesn't show them as a full transcript or let you copy them. A TikTok to text tool gives you the whole transcript as text.

How do I turn on captions on TikTok?

Open the video, tap the Share arrow, tap Captions, and switch on Show captions. If there's no Captions option, that video has no captions.

Yes. The short links the TikTok app copies (vm.tiktok.com and tiktok.com/t/) work the same as full video links.

Can I transcribe a TikTok in another language?

Yes. TikTok to Text detects most languages automatically and transcribes in the original language. To translate it, paste the link into the Video Transcript Translator and pick your language.

Can I get TikTok subtitles as an SRT file?

Yes. Paste the TikTok link into the Subtitle Generator and click Generate subtitles. You can download SRT or VTT captions with timestamps.

Why is my TikTok transcript empty or wrong?

The video may have no speech (only music), loud music over the voice, or very fast talking. Photo posts usually have no speech at all; use Image to Text on screenshots instead.

Is the video stored?

No. The audio is downloaded to a temporary folder, transcribed, and deleted straight away.

Which method should you use?

  • One video, full text: paste the link into TikTok to Text.
  • Just following along: TikTok's built-in captions.
  • A file on your phone: upload it to Audio & Video to Text.
  • Captions for your own posts: TikTok's editor, or an SRT from the Subtitle Generator.
  • Text on slides: screenshots and Image to Text.
  • Thousands of videos for a study: the TikTok Research API.
