- 3

What people use it for
- Understanding a change: ask an AI to explain what a commit in an open-source project does.
- Code review: get a second opinion on a pull request before you approve it.
- Release notes: turn a comparison between two versions into a readable changelog.
- Documentation: paste the change into a ticket, a report or an email as plain text.
GitHub Commit to Text FAQ
What links work? +
A commit (github.com/owner/repo/commit/…), a pull request (/pull/…, including its Files tab) or a comparison between two versions (/compare/v1.0...v1.1). api.github.com links to the same things work too.
Does it work with private repositories? +
No. We read GitHub's public pages, so the repository has to be public. For private code, run git show or git diff on your computer and paste the output into your AI chat.
What does "For AI" do? +
It puts a short instruction (explain the change, review it for bugs, write release notes or a commit message) above a summary and the full diff, so you can paste it straight into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini.
Is there a size limit? +
We show up to about 400,000 characters of changes, roughly what an AI chat can take. Bigger changes are cut off at that point and say so; very large pull requests can't be shown as text by GitHub at all.
Is it free? +
Yes. A few changes an hour without an account; sign up free (no password, we email you a code) for more.
